Here’s a short fantasy tale about a dragon with a twist of magic and mystery:
The Last Ember of Virethorn
The Virethorn Mountains were not always cold. Once, rivers of molten light ran through them and auroras burned like living fire. But that age ended, and the world froze into silence.
Elen grew up hearing the old stories, though no one believed them anymore. Fire was myth. Warmth was memory. Dragons were warnings for children.
Then, one night, the stars flickered—just once—and something called to him.
He followed the pull through a blizzard, guided by a pulse beneath the ice. It led him to a fissure exhaling impossible warmth. Elen squeezed inside.
The cavern glowed with dying embers trapped in stone. At its center lay a nest of radiant spheres—and curled around them, a dragon. Ancient, cracked, barely smoking.
Its eyes opened.
“I am Ashyrion,” it whispered. “The last ember of the First Fire.”
Elen’s breath shook. “You’re real.”
“Real… and dying. When my flame fades, this world freezes forever.”
The stones beneath Ashyrion flickered weakly. Elen reached for the only flame he carried: a tiny lantern, its ember passed down through generations.
He held it out.
Ashyrion inhaled the flame. For a heartbeat, nothing.
Then his eyes ignited—gold, crimson, and starlight swirling like newborn galaxies.
“You have given me more than fire,” he said, rising renewed. “You have given me a story. And stories… are flame.”
The cavern blazed. Ashyrion burst into the sky, melting snow and cracking frozen rivers. Green shoots pierced the thawing earth.
Elen watched as the dragon ascended, becoming a streak of fire—a new constellation, and a reminder that even the smallest ember can rekindle an age.
